Founding History and Campus Location

The Selangor Institute of Music (SIM in short) is a private music school founded in 1930. The campus is located in two strategic locations, within the capital city of Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur, and in Petaling Jaya. The Institute has over 450 students and over 40 qualified, experienced teachers at any one time.

Objectives & Vision of SIM

SIM has various music programmes suited towards all age groups, from very young children to adults.  The Institute strives to achieve the highest standards in music training, with the ultimate goal of producing professional musicians. SIM is also committed towards raising the standard of music in Malaysia.

SIM Performance

SIM has constantly achieved excellent performance in the ABRSM London Examinations, year after year. For example, in the Grades 1-8 group, SIM holds a record of 96-100% passes with a high percentage of students achieving distinctions. We have also trained many diploma students, many of whom have continued to pursue their musical training internationally. We take pride that our student graduates are now actively involved in the growing music and arts industry in Malaysia.

SIM and the Young Talent

To prepare students for playing instruments and learning music theory, we conduct the Kindermusik programs for children between the ages of newborn to 7. This course provides a fun and stimulating musical environment for the learning of musical concepts and general musicianship while nurturing the TOTAL development of young children. This Kindermusik program course has successfully educated and motivated many children to continue their study of music with enthusiasm and with outstanding performance.

SIM Concerts & Workshops

SIM has played a major role in promoting music amongst the general public and its community by way of organising public concerts, seminars and workshops. These concerts include those that are performed by our own students, as well as those performed by  local and international professional musicians. From time to time, workshops are organized, led by professional artists and musicians.

SIM Programmes & Courses

SIM offers a wide range of music theory courses, aural training and practical training.

We teach piano, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, classical guitar, electric guitar, Chinese harp (Koo Zheng), pipa, electone organ, string ensemble, drum, vocal, Adult Piano Course, Music Appreciation Class.

We prepare students for examinations conducted by the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM), and the Trinity College of London (in all of the above mentioned instruments other than the Chinese harp, pipa and string ensemble).

We have courses for grades 1-8, as well as for diploma courses.  We also run a well established Kindermusik Programme, and Adult Piano Courses.

SIM Facilities & Services

The head office is situated in the Petaling Jaya campus, while the Kuala Lumpur capital city campus provides a convenient branch campus for many. Apart from housing the administrative and pedagogic work of the school, the school provides facilities for practical music including that of a music hall for staging performances, teaching rooms, lecture rooms, practice rooms, keyboard laboratories and a library. All facilities are fully air-conditioned and are sound proofed.

The Music Library is located within the school and contains musical scores, periodicals, dictionaries, and reference books. There are also audio and visual equipment, and is well stocked with a wide range of materials.

The Keyboard Laboratories are located in both Petaling Jaya head office and Kuala Lumpur branch campus. Each laboratory has five digital pianos, a teaching laboratory system, digital sequencers, and a sound module.

SIM Awards

The institute presents the following annual awards:

• SIM Achievement Award - in recognition of students who achieved the highest score in their practical examinations (for their respective grades)
• SIM Honour Award - in recognition of students who achieved full marks in their theory examinations
• SIM Excellent Award - in recognition of an outstanding teacher of the year

SIM Music Supplies

The SIM Music Supplies facilitate students in acquiring necessary musical books, instruments and accessories in a cost-efficient, expedient and timely manner. Teachers, students and others can purchase items from the SIM Music Supplies.

Akademi Muzik SIM

The Academy is the first music academy in Malaysia to establish a music twinning programme with an Australian Institution - the University of Western Australian School of Music. Degrees offered include the Bachelor of Music (BMus), Bachelor of Music Education (BMusEd) and the Bachelor of Music Teaching (BMusT).
